Bid goodbye to aging skin and welcome youthful skin
Our skin is influenced by various factors as we grow older: sunlight, harsh weather, and personal habits. However, we can take steps to maintain its elasticity and youthful appearance.
The way your skin ages depends on several factors such as your lifestyle, diet, genetics, and habits. For example, smoking can create harmful molecules called free radicals, which damage cells and lead to premature wrinkles.
There are other reasons too. Common causes of wrinkled and spotted skin include natural aging, sun exposure (known as photoaging), pollution, and loss of underlying support from fatty tissues. Additional factors contributing to skin aging include stress, gravity, facial movements over time, weight gain, and even how you sleep.
What Kind of Skin Changes Come With Age?
As we age, the following natural changes happen to our skin:
- Skin texture becomes rougher.
- Skin may develop benign tumors and lesions.
- Skin loses elasticity (elastin), causing it to sag.
- Skin becomes more translucent as the outer layer (epidermis) thins.
- Skin becomes fragile due to the flattening of the junction between the epidermis and dermis.
- Skin bruises more easily because blood vessel walls become thinner.
As we age, changes beneath the skin become noticeable too:
- Fat loss under the skin in areas like cheeks, temples, chin, nose, and eyes can lead to a leaner appearance, loose skin, sunken eyes, and a more skeletal look.
- Bone loss, especially around the mouth and chin, becomes more apparent after age 60, causing skin to pucker around the mouth.
- Cartilage loss in the nose results in the drooping of the nasal tip and highlights the bony structures of the nose.
Impact of Sun Exposure on Your Skin
Sunlight is the primary cause of aging skin. UV light from the sun damages elastin fibers in the skin over time. This damage makes the skin sag, stretch, and lose its ability to bounce back after stretching. Sun-exposed skin also bruises and tears more easily and takes longer to heal. Even if you don’t see sun damage when you’re young, it becomes more apparent as you age.
While you can’t completely undo sun damage, the skin can sometimes repair itself. Laser treatments can also help reverse some damage. It’s never too late to start protecting yourself from sun exposure and skin cancer. You can delay aging effects by avoiding the sun and using sunscreen with zinc oxide, SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreens with iron oxide block visible and blue light, which can cause pigmentation issues and skin aging similar to UVA light. Also, wear protective clothing like long sleeves, pants, hats with wide brims, and sunglasses to shield sun-exposed skin.
